Behind the Brush: Painting Psalm 139 – Wonderfully Made

When I began painting for this 16-month Biblical calendar, I knew I wanted to choose Psalms that speak to the full journey of our faith and expression of Adonai in all His wonderful ways. Psalms that express joy and sorrow, strength and surrender, praise and prayer. Psalm 139 has always been one of those that reminds me of how 'all knowing' and intimate our Creator is. It beautifully speaks into the intimacy between us and our Creator.

“For You have created my conscience.

You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise You, for I am awesomely, wonderfully made!”

(Psalm 139:13–14, TLV)

Psalm 139 reminds us that God sees us, knows us, and is with us in every moment - before we speak a word, before we take a breath. There’s nowhere we can go where His Spirit does not already dwell.

Painting with Watercolour

This was one of the first paintings for the calendar. The design shows a womb-like swirl of colour around a baby quiet and restful - being formed in secret, yet under the full gaze of God.

I intentionally left parts of the image soft and undefined, to reflect the idea that while we may not always see the full picture of our own lives, God sees it all - clearly and in His perfect will.

Psalm 139 takes on even more richness. Not only are we fearfully and wonderfully made, but through Messiah Yeshua, we come to understand how intimately God desires to redeem and restore His people.
