Behind the Brush: Painting Psalm 23 - The Shepherd and the Still Waters

Psalm 23 is such a comforting and reassuring Bible verse. When I was planning my 16-month Biblical calendar, I knew this Psalm had to be included. It’s one of the most well-known passages in all of Scripture - and for good reason. It meets us in every season with the assurance that we are not alone.

“Adonai is my Shepherd, I shall not want...”(Psalm 23:1, TLV)

My hope is that the artwork reflects the incredible shalom, stillness and His guidance that this Psalm so beautifully expresses.

The composition isn't loud or detailed - it's soft, calm, and reassuring. It’s meant to feel like a pause in the middle of life’s noise, trials and pain. A moment of rest and of shalom.

A reminder that God is leading us, even when we can’t see the full path ahead.

The Messianic Meaning

This Psalm carries such meaning. In John 10:11, Yeshua says, “I am the Good Shepherd.” When I read Psalm 23, I see not only King David’s words, but a prophecy fulfilled in Messiah—the One who walks with us through every valley and sets a table before us in the presence of our enemies.
