But You Are a Shield Around Me - Psalm 3
This illustration is inspired by Psalm 3 and the declaration of trust: “But You, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head.” Written during a time of danger and opposition, this Psalm speaks of confidence in God’s protection even when surrounded by fear and attack.
Psalm 3 reflects the reality of conflict and vulnerability, yet it also reveals the faithfulness of God as defender and protector of His people. Throughout Scripture, arrows often symbolise accusation, fear, destruction, and the threats that rise against the righteous. Yet God is described as a shield — not distant, but surrounding His people on every side.
In this painting, movement and direction within the composition suggest arrows descending through darkness and turmoil, while a covering presence surrounds and shelters beneath. Layers of light breaking through shadow reflect the security found under God’s protection. Though danger presses in, there remains peace and steadfastness within His covering.
The imagery points to the assurance that even in troubled times, God remains near. He does not promise the absence of battle, but His presence within it. The shield of God becomes both refuge and strength — protecting, sustaining, and lifting the head of the weary.
This artwork serves as a visual reminder that when fear and opposition rise like arrows around us, the Lord remains a faithful shield — covering His people with protection, mercy, and steadfast care.
